What is an R. A. Motor?

R. A. stands for Right Ascension.  A right ascension motor is sometimes called a tracking motor because it allows a telescope to track the movement of the stars across the night sky, or a clock drive motor because that movement is measured in clock based hours, minutes and seconds.  All of our R. A. motors have a clutch for manual override.  Both 110 volt and 220 volt versions are available.

Customer Comments

"Unique equipment at reasonable prices.  Excellent service.  You guys are the best!"  (K. K.)

"My new RA motor on my old Super Polaris mount works perfectly!!  I had no problem installing and I was very pleasantly surprised to find Orion's beautiful nebula staying dead center in my eyepiece for over twenty minutes.  Thank you for making great astronomy affordable."  (J. B.)

"While I've heard of you in the past, and have seen your products (at RTMC for example), I've never done business with you before.  Because of other manufacturers, I tread very slowly on first purchases ... to minimize losses if it turns out their product is below par.  You recently sold me the RA drive motor for a Super Polaris mount.  I can't believe how effortlessly it installed!  [It was] up and running in less than five minutes...unbelievable.  I'll be back.  Thank you for a great, simple product that works, right out of the box."  (T. A. S.)

"... I've been using my Meade 2080 GEM with JMI motors for about the past five or six years without a hitch. ..."  (T. M.)

"You can be assured that I will tell my friends who are involved in astronomy of the high quality of service that you provide."  (B. R. S.)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Are your R.A. motors AC or DC?
A. With the exception of the NGT telescopes, all of our R.A. motors are 110v or 220v AC.  They can be powered with a DC to AC inverter for use in the field.

Q. Do you make R.A. motors for fork mounted SCTs?
A. No.  Most fork mounted SCTs built today have R.A. motors included and replacements should be obtained from the manufacturer.  Our R.A. motors are for a wide variety of light- to medium-duty German equatorial mounts which do not come standard with an R.A. motor, such as Celestron's Super Polaris and Great Polaris mounts or Meade's 4500 mount.

Q. How does an R.A. motor attach to the telescope?
A. The motor is attached to an exposed end of the slow-motion drive shaft.  This may be accomplished by a direct connection or by a geared system.  In the cases where the slow-motion knob can remain in place, a slip clutch in the motor allows the knob to be turned manually without turning the motor.  The motor is mounted on a bracket which attaches to the telescope mount.  The power cord is about four feet long.

Q. I have a very inexpensive mount.  Is there an R.A. motor for my mount or am I out of luck?
A. JMI has a versatile R.A. motor that will work on many light-duty mounts that include a slow-motion control, like those made by Jason, Swift, Tasco and Parks PRT series.  Check the list of mounts that fit our RA17001 part number.
